The Engineering and GIS Department primary responsibilities include the design of improvement projects, preparation of plans and specifications, contract administration, field inspection of various construction projects and the construction of all public works projects.
Additionally, feasibility studies are performed on proposed projects, including the compilation of engineering data and other items such as traffic counts. The Engineering and GIS Department issues permits which control work performed within the public right-of-way, connections to municipal utilities and sets standards to be followed when working within the public right-of-way.
The City of Alma is a member of the Gratiot County GIS Authority. A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. The GIS provides mapping and spatial analysis support to internal departments and the citizens of Gratiot County free of charge.
GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. GIS helps answer questions and solve problems by looking at data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared.
